The teams have 24 hours to create, film, and edit a video and  PSA for their respective charities. Viewers will vote next month on the final videos and the winners will be announced at WPPI 2009

In this episode, the teams brainstorm ideas, and debate creative concepts… without any bloodshed whatsoever…  My favorite moments are when Bambi Cantrell claims that “F” is a “really cool letter” and asks for a spelling clarification when jotting down script notes about a very specific adult-oriented group activity…

24 Photographers, 24 Hours, 2 teams, 1 Winner

by Jeff Greene /

The premiere episode of  “The Longest Day”, an online reality TV show about professional photographers, is now online.

The premise is simple… bring 24 of the hottest professional photographers from around North America to Southern California, split them into two teams, and provide each team with an assignment to complete in just 24 hours.

That assignment is to write, shoot, and edit an original short film about photography, AND an original PSA about the respective charities on behalf of which they are playing: ThirstRelief and Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep.

Here are the two teams of photographers:

  • Team A
    Dane Sanders, Captain
    Jules Bianchi
    Kevin Kubota
    Robert Evans
    Alisha Todd
    Chris Humphreys
    David Jay
    Kenny Kim
    Jen Bebbs
    Steve Bebbs
    Bronson Pate
    [b]ecker

    Playing for :
    ThirstRelief
  • Team B
    Bambi Cantrell, Captain
    Jim Garner
    Catherine Hall
    Brook Todd
    Joe Photo
    Katie Humphreys
    Michele Celentano
    Jasmine Starr
    Amber Holritz
    Jessica Claire
    Gene Higa
    Ann Hamilton

    Playing for :
Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep.

As WPPI 2009 approaches (February 14-19), each of the 30-minute behind-the-scenes episodes will be posted online. About a week before WPPI, the final short films and PSAs from each team will then be posted so viewers can vote for Best Video and Best PSA

The winning team will win $3,000 for their respective charity and the other charity will receive $2,000.

There aren’t really any losers here… But with Microsoft Icon of Imaging, and “Team B” Captain, Bambi Cantrell working with Seattle photographer Jim Garner; the Microsoft Pro Photo Community staff is definitely rooting for Team B.  Especially since Team B must feature Microsoft Expression Media 2 in their final video…

So keep checking here for the latest updates,  …and remember, this is only an exhibition – please, no wagering….

Every New Years Day a vast majority of us break out pencil and paper and jot down some New Years Resolutions in a misguided attempt at self-improvement. Unfortunately, these lofty goals for the year are usually abandoned within mere hours of their creation.

Instead of resolving to lose weight, get in shape, or save money; why not commit to something that is entertaining and fun? The odds of success increase dramatically if we actually enjoy what we’re doing.  In that light I propose that each of you form a list of New Years Photo Resolutions for 2009.

…and by the way, I’m not referring to pixel resolution here, so spare me the witty emails.

My 366/2008 Self Portrait Project

366-2008_Mosaic2

Last year I was inspired by an article on the Photojojo website to start a year-long photo project where I would take a picture of myself everyday of the year. Some of the photos are creative, most banal, some awful… Doesn’t matter. My goal was to compose and create an image everyday of the year. You know what? I made it. The results can be viewed here if you’re interested.

You can choose whatever you like to put on your New Years Photo Resolution list. Some folks have resolved to upgrade from compact cameras to SLRs, some to embrace RAW format, others to improve their Photoshop skills, and a few have even decided to finally move from film to digital.   Better late than never….

A few broad ideas with some potential :

  • Start a project
  • Try some new software
  • Try a new technique
  • Share your images
  • Share your knowledge
  • Enter more contests
  • Volunteer your skills
  • Get organized
  • Start a photo business

Use the above as broad guidelines but make your goals very specific. The point is to improve your photography, so you’ll need to set some stretch goals and add to your skill set.  I recommend making a list of the top ten things you would like to accomplish in photography this year, then start at the top of the list and go for it.

Good luck… drop me a line and let me know what your goals are this year in photography. If you keep at it and it’s interesting, I’ll feature it in a future blog post.

Happy New Year!

by Jeff Greene /

For better and worse, 2008 was a historic year. Every week there were exhilarating highs and demoralizing lows in the news, and all of these valleys and troughs had at least one commonality; they were photographed and published by the worlds’ press.

Microsoft Icons of Imaging Deanne Fitzmaurice, Peter Read Miller, and Bob Rosato all had images selected for collections of the years’ best photos. Deanne's photos were featured in Time Magazines’ 2009 Pictures That Mattered and were the subject of a recent Pro Photo Blog post.

Peter and Bob both shoot for Sports Illustrated and had several images featured in the SI’s Greatest Shots of ‘08.

An Iconic Microsoft Company Photo – 30 Years Later

Thirty years ago, on December 7th, 1978, the entire Microsoft staff gathered at Royal Frontier Studios in Albuquerque for a company portrait. It is the only image of it’s kind from that era and is one of the most iconic images in Microsofts’ history. For those of us who work here, it serves as a historical touch point illustrating how a small, yet passionate and dedicated, group could quite literally change the world.

It was during this time in Albuquerque that the name “Microsoft” was trademarked and where Bill Gates laid out his famous mission statement for the company: A computer on every desk and in every home running Microsoft software.

In April this year, 11 of Microsoft’s 12 original employees gathered again to re-create the famous photo that was taken shortly before the company relocated in 1978 from its Albuquerque birthplace to Washington State.

TIME – Pictures That Matter

by Jeff Greene /

Pulitzer prize winning photographer, and Microsoft Icon of Imaging, Deanne Fitzmaurice has once again been recognized for her outstanding work in  photojournalism.

 Newburyport in the snow.

TIME Magazine has selected one of Deanne's’ images for the title page of it’s 2008 collection of Pictures That Mattered from an essay she produced of Frank and Joe Capley-Alfano’s same-sex marriage in San Francisco, California.  The couples’ marriage was later annulled by the California Supreme Court, a decision it reversed in May. The couple, who wed again this year, is anxiously awaiting the outcome of challenges to Proposition 8, banning same-sex marriages, which was passed by voters in November.

Joe Alfano, left, and Frank Capley are on their way to be married at San Francisco's City Hall on June 17th after the California Supreme Court decides it is legal for same-sex couples to marry. Joe and Frank have been together for 8 years.

Deanne documented their entire wedding day and the photo above was selected as part of the 2008 TIME Magazine year-end collection of Pictures That Mattered.  In addition, the collection of wedding day images with Frank and Joe’s commentary can be seen on MSNBC.com

Reed Hoffmann ©Kevin Gilbert Our good friend and Microsoft Icon of Imaging Reed Hoffman is profiled by writer Mark Lapin in a new article posted on the Microsoft Pro Photo website

Reed discusses his award-winning career and explains how life’s surprises, making the best of fortunate circumstances, and being in the right place at the right time all contributes to a successful career as a visual story teller.

In addition to his career as a photojournalist, Reed also shares his knowledge by leading workshops and photo tours through Blue Pixel, a company he co-founded with photographer Kevin Gilbert.

"Teaching has been extremely rewarding, especially with digital photography," he says in the article.

"With a few tips and a little explanation of what's going on with the camera, people can progress so quickly. Every trip I've been on, people come back with some wonderful pictures, regardless of their experience level."

First of all, if you haven’t done so already, quit reading this and go vote. Now.

If you are not sure where your polling place is located, take 30 seconds and check here: http://www.voteforchange.com/ I’ll wait…

Today is a historic one in the annals of American politics and one I have awaited with great anticipation. Aside from the obvious factors of race and gender, there are several additional aspects that make this a unique election.

  • For the first time since 1952, none of the candidates are an incumbent President or current Vice President.

  • Regardless of who wins, there will be a new President or Vice President in their 40s, the youngest to hold office since JFK and younger than a vast majority of the voting public.

  • Political experts are forecasting a record voter turn-out in both sheer numbers and percentage of registered voters casting ballots.

Ballot 2008a All of this makes for an exciting period in our nations’ history and should be documented for the ages. The New York Times Polling Place Project, asks photographers to photograph voters and polling stations in their area and submit them to the online collection. By documenting local voting experiences, participants can contribute to an archive of photographs that captures the richness and complexity of voting in America. Rules vary from state to state regarding taking photographs inside the polling areas, so please ask before you shoot….

After the polls close, follow the returns tonight with your friends and family and witness the results and ultimate conclusion of two long years of presidential campaigning.

For the record, my prediction for the final Electoral Vote is 326 – 212.

Daylight Saving Time Ends

by Jeff Greene /

It’s the first Sunday in November and that means it’s time to run around the house setting all your clocks back one hour.  Well, with all the confusion don’t forget to set the clocks on your digital cameras as well.

The days are shorter with brighter mornings and darker evenings, but if you forget to change the time on your Digital SLR, you can use Microsoft Pro Photo Tools and it’s Date Time feature to adjust the time in your images’ metadata.  Works great when working in different time zones too…

The Peace Caravan Project is an ongoing collection of images by photographer Marla Mossmann that aims to “nourish the principles of international co-operation, exchange cultural values, share understanding of the environment, and foster the equality of all peoples including women and children.”

MapMossman and her Peace Caravan Project are traveling from Jerusalem, Israel to X’ian, China by car, foot, horse, mule and camel to document places of historical and religious significance mentioned in the Bible, the Torah, the Koran and the Veda’s. In a quest to explore her heritage and spirituality and the connection to Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, Hinduism, and Islam she has already taken four expeditions to photograph India, Turkey, Afghanistan and the Middle East countries of Syria, Jordan and Israel.

Fully supported by the New York Foundation for the Arts and voluntary contributions, Mossman’s photos capture the people along her journey reminding us that, though we have differences, we all share the same fears, hopes and dreams in our daily lives.

Whether viewed on the website gallery or on display in the exhibitions; the Peace Caravan endeavors to inform and inspire others to achieve understanding, tolerance, and acceptance.

    Digital Railroad Jumps the Tracks

    By Jeff Greene /

    DRR Screen

This announcement from Digital Railroad was posted on the

DRR.net  site today recommending immediate action for member photographers:

We're sorry to inform you that Digital Railroad (DRR) has shut down. On October 15th we reported that the company had reduced its staff and was aggressively pursuing additional financing and/or a strategic partner. Unfortunately, those efforts were unsuccessful. Therefore Digital Railroad has been forced to suspend all operations. This archive may only be accessible for the next 24 hours.

The Stock Artists Alliance had this comment in an email earlier today:

The SAA recommends that any photographer with a DRR archive act without delay to:

    • Ensure that all of your files and data are backed up.
    • Download all details of licenses made with outstanding royalties due.
    • Download a list of all registered users who have accessed your Archive.
    • Check that any monthly or annual fees do not continue to be billed to your credit card.

SAA is greatly concerned about the status of outstanding royalties due to photographers from DRR's Marketplace stock portal, as well as the manner in which this closure has been handled, giving loyal customers no reasonable advance warning or support. We will continue to monitor the situation and try to assist in any way we can on behalf of photographers.

According to Phillip Demanczuk, a nature photographer based out of Reno, NV, PhotoShelter,  a competing online storefront and archive has reportedly made offers to migrate the entire collections of current Digital Railroad subscribers over to their service.  More details to follow….
